Vaginoplasty

Risks, Side Effects and Complications

  1. Dizziness after Vaginoplasty or Posterior Vaginal Repair
    • Nausea and vomiting may be experienced, as a side effect of the given anesthesia, which should be relieved as soon as its effect wears off.
  2. Post-operative pain after Vaginoplasty or Posterior Vaginal Repair
    • Pain around the surgical wound may be felt as soon as the anesthetic wears off. Analgesic is prescribed and should be taken as needed.
    • During the process of healing, you may experience itching, irritation or stress around the surgical wound. Refrain from heavy activities to prevent wound rupture and tearing.
  3. Urinary frequency or difficulty in urination after Vaginoplasty or Posterior Vaginal Repair
    • Urinary frequency or difficulty in urination may be noted a few days due to the tightening of the vaginal muscles immediately after surgery. It is expected to gradually disappear after the vaginal muscles have started to loosen up a bit.
    • After the surgery, some women may experience difficulty in urination and may be catheterized for 2-3 days to prevent cystitis.
    • If difficulty in urination after going back home is experienced, especially in the first 5-7 days after the surgery, please contact the Hospital or see Dr. Vitasna immediately.
  4. Abnormal bleeding after Vaginoplasty or Posterior Vaginal Repair
    • Abnormal bleeding or hematoma formation seldom occurs. Aspirin and other anti-coagulant drugs should be avoided at least 10 days before and after the scheduled surgery.
    • If excessive bleeding from the surgical wound occurs after surgery, all expenses for services and treatment for this post-surgical complication will no longer be charged to you. However, if the bleeding or other complications occur due to your non-compliance with the doctor’s orders, you will be charged accordingly.
  5. Abnormal vaginal discharge after Vaginoplasty or Posterior Vaginal Repair
    • You may have abnormal vaginal discharge, brownish or yellowish discharge after the procedure because the vagina is full of secretions and various kinds of bacteria have reaction to tissues and suture material(s). This may take place up until 6 weeks. At this time, the sutures are expected to dissolve. In case of foul smelling vaginal discharges you have to take additional medications.
    • You may experience abnormal vaginal discharge or curd like discharge as a result of yeast infection, possibly following taking antibiotics. Appropriate medications will be prescribed to treat the symptoms.
  6. Inflammation or infection after Vaginoplasty or Posterior Vaginal Repair
    • Inflammation is expected on the first 3- 5 days of the healing process. Infection may occur due to the fact that the surgical wound is prone to contamination with fluids from the vaginal tract, urinary tract and alimentary (fecal) tract.
    • Infection may also happen due to failure adhering to the post-operative instructions, medication regimen and due to an existing disease such as diabetes or underlying vaginal infection before the surgery.
    • Leakage (Fistula) between vagina and neighboring organs after Vaginoplasty or Posterior Vaginal Repair
  7. Leakage (Fistula) between Bladder (or rectum) and vagina is theoretically considered a rare precaution. In this respect, if you experience vaginal body fluid with feces-like smell, please inform Dr. Vitasna immediately for prompt diagnosis and treatment of such symptom.
